Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced today that he will go after rogue sanctuary cities, but has given them one last chance to comply with federal immigration law before they feel the wrath from the law and order Trump administration.
Today, I’m urging states and local jurisdictions to comply with these federal laws.”
When cities and states refuse to help enforce immigration laws, our nation is less safe.
Failure to deport aliens who are convicted of criminal offenses puts whole communities at risk, especially immigrant communities in the very sanctuary jurisdictions that seek to protect perpetrators.
Today I’m urging states and local jurisdictions to comply with these federal laws including 8 USC § 1373.
And now the Department of Justice will require that jurisdictions seeking or applying for Department of Justice grants to certify compliance with 1373 as a condition for receiving those awards.
Plus Sessions added that “the Department of Justice will also take all lawful steps to clawback any funds awarded to a jurisdiction that willfully violates 1373.”
Those against sanctuary cities are quick to point out numerous crimes committed by illegals that have been given a safe haven within them.
While Session’s announcement seems limited to the $4B in “anticipated” DOJ grants, President Trump has promised to go much further to “punish” sanctuary cities, promising to end all federal funding for them.
If he follows through with that promise, New York City alone faces a cut of $7 billion dollars in federal funding, if they don’t comply.
