Tuesday, the White House announced that it is planning a “big immigration launch” which will enforce the proposal by the Department of Homeland Security.
This proposal wants ten thousand officers hired in order to perform prompt deportations of illegal criminals.
On Friday, the DHS plan was signed on behalf of the new secretary, John Kelly.
Secretary Kelly not only asked for 10,000 additional ICE officers and agents, but 5,000 new U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents.
“The surge of immigration at the southern border has overwhelmed federal agencies and resources and has created a significant national security vulnerability to the United States,” wrote Kelly.
Kelly found it necessary to initiate the wall building along the U.S.-Mexico border, and supported Trump in this decision.
“Criminal aliens have demonstrated their disregard for the rule of law and pose a threat to persons residing in the United States,” Kelly writes in the memorandums. “As such criminal aliens are a priority for removal.”
The local law enforcement agencies will conduct a so-called 287(g) — a section on the federal Immigration and Nationality Act that enables the DHS to delegate state and local law-enforcement officers, after which they can perform the duties of federal immigration agents.
“Regardless of the White House’s response, this document is an absolutely accurate description of the disturbing mindset that pervades the Trump administration when it comes to our nation’s immigrants,” said U.S. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.)
