Vladimir Putin said that Russia now has modern nuclear missiles and state of the art military forces, and is now “stronger than any potential aggressor.”
Putin blames the withdrawal of America in 2001 from the Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) Treaty “created the conditions for a new nuclear arms race.”
The US-Soviet ABM Treaty was signed and sealed in 1972, and it was George W Bush who withdraw from the treaty so the US could build a missile defence system.
The Russian President said at his annual press conference: “It’s no secret we’ve worked hard to improve our missile forces.”
“We have had to modernise our offensive systems,” said Putin after America withdrew from the ABM Treaty.
“If anyone is unleashing an arms race it’s not us. We will never spend resources on an arms race that we can’t afford,” he added.
Putin denied Obama’s allegations that Russia had something to do with the hacking scandal during the election season.
“I’ve said before that the losing side is looking for people to blame outside. They would do better to look for the problems among themselves.”
Putin stated that Democrats came pretty low in congressional elections. Then, he asked: “So that’s my work too?”
He also talked about the democratic process in America.
“Yes, there are democratic problems. We have raised them with our US partners more than once.”
“It is in the archaic nature of the US system,” he noted with a reference to the electoral college.
“So some states have preferences? Why do they still have that today…well that is a question for the American people.”
However, Putin admitted that America is a great nation, adding that the relationship between America and Russia will become stronger after Trump’s inauguration.
It’s more than clear that Putin has a friendly relationship with Trump, which is something we can’t say about his ‘friendship’ with Obama.
These question and answer sessions are a nice opportunity to get some answers regarding foreign policy. The good thing is that Putin answers every question directly.
The marathon was postponed for one day because Putin honored Andrei Karlov, the Russian ambassador who was shot dead in Turkey, and attended the funeral.
What do you think about the relationship with Russia?
